When your grandparents played Donkey Kong games, the giant ape was a bad guy who mostly threw wooden barrels. When your parents played them, Donkey and his nephew Diddy battled an evil tribe of crocs that had stolen his bananas.

Well, he’s back — and back where he belongs, battling the Tiki Tak Tribe. He is still safeguarding his stash of bananas. He still has barrels, but now he can fly them as he and Diddy brave yet another fast-paced, challenging, two-dimensional, side-scrolling adventure.

(2K Games for Mac OS, Linux, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC)

Sid Meier’s Civilization series, introduced 34 years ago on computers so primitive they might have used steam engines, interwove detailed history with a turn-based strategy.

What if the Roman Empire had survived to today? What if the United States and Pharaoh’s Egypt somehow became the world’s superpowers? Civilization games aren’t just mindless wars; they involve economic, technological and political development.

All Civilization games have been fun, but powered by new technology, they have also become beautiful to watch.

(Private Division and Take-Two Interactive for PS5, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Steam)

Hobbit games have mostly been about combat and adventures, but Tales of the Shire is a life simulation — picture Animal Crossing comes to Middle Earth!

It is about farming, fishing and making friends. Players can also cook, clean and throw parties without worrying about the Wraiths of Mordor knocking on their door or a Balrog hiding in their closet.

The first Donkey Kong game came out in 1981. Here is how Nintendo’s giant ape has changed over the years:

1981: Donkey Kong debuted in the arcade game Donkey Kong.

1982: A distinctly primitive Donkey Kong appears on Game & Watch (a handheld gaming device).

1994 to present: Donkey Kong’s personality has evolved during this time. He no longer is a mindless villain but a more lovable, heroic figure fighting to protect his home, the jungle and his friends.
