GAMES TODAY: FUN OR TOO EXPENSIVE?

Videogames on early home consoles looked like simple stick figures and doodles, with little sound or music. That changed in 1985 when Nintendo introduced Super Mario Bros., a colorful game with fun music, made by just five people on a tiny game file.

MarioToday, games are HUGE! Big teams make games with amazing graphics that look like movies, but you need super-powerful consoles like the Switch 2 to play them. Those games can cost $70 — and the new consoles can cost up to $600!

The good news: You can find cheaper fun games online, like old-school games or “indie” games, and subscription services let you play hundreds of games for a monthly fee. You can also find stores that sell used games. Even better, a lot of public libraries offer games you can borrow for free — and scoutlife.org/games is your go-to spot for tons of free games anytime, anywhere!

Pro Tip:

Wait a year after a new console comes out before buying it — prices go down, and the games get even better!
