Submarines help scientists, explorers and the military discover new things about our oceans.
Here are seven fast facts about submarines.
1. They are very quiet, allowing them to sneak up on other ships and avoid detection. Because of this, the submarine force of the U.S. Navy has the nickname “The Silent Service.”
2. Some submarines are powered by nuclear energy, letting them stay submerged for months without needing to refuel.
3. The HMS Vengeance holds the record for staying submerged for more than six months, the longest in history.
4. Tiny submarines are called submersibles.
5. Submarines use a system called “ballast tanks” to float and dive.
6. Some submarines can dive as deep as 36,000 feet — that’s deeper than Mount Everest is tall.
7. National Submarine Day is April 11.
