A hailstone measuring 8 inches in diameter is the largest ever officially recorded in the United States. The hailstone, which landed July 23 in Vivian, S.D., also measured 18.625 inches in circumference and weighed 1.9375 pounds. It was part of an intense hailstorm, which also brought winds of 80 miles per hour and a brief tornado.
The previous record hailstone landed June 22, 2003, in Aurora, Neb. It measured 7 inches in diameter. A hailstone that landed Sept. 3, 1970 in Coffeyville, Kan., held the previous weight record at 1.67 pounds.
