Deep-Sea Species

A team of Canadian and Spanish researchers is discovering new species as it studies deep waters off the coast of Newfoundland. The 20-day expedition uses a remotely operated vehicle to dive up to 9,800 feet below the water’s surface. The goal: to “uncover relationships between cold-water coral and other bottom-dwelling creatures.”

Perhaps 11 new species have been discovered during the expedition, including a purple octopus.
