The Red Planet will look larger to backyard astronomers this week than at any other time from 2008 to 2014. Mars will be “only” 99 million kilometers from earth for the next week or so.
The best time to see Mars will be Friday, Jan. 29, when it converges with the full moon. Mars will be “directly opposite the sun” and “will rise alongside the moon at sunset and soar overhead at midnight.” Use a telescope for closer viewing, but Mars will also be visible to the naked eye.
To bad it’s supposed to storm in Memphis on the 29th.
I’ll look but it’s past the 29th now.
