9 Fast Facts About Sea Lions

Sea lions are strong swimmers. They use their flippers to zoom through the water extremely fast.

Here are nine fast facts about sea lions.

1. Sea lions bark loudly to talk to each other, just like dogs.

2. They love hanging out together on the beach in big groups called “colonies” or “rafts.”

3. Unlike seals, sea lions have tiny ear flaps you can see on the sides of their heads.

4. Sea lions love to play! They chase each other, ride waves and toss around seaweed.

5. Baby sea lions are called “pups.” They stay close to their moms for about a year and learn how to swim and hunt.

6. Sea lions’ short, thick fur keeps them warm in chilly water.

7. They eat fish, squid and octopus.

8. They can hold their breath and dive deep into the ocean — sometimes for up to 20 minutes.

9. They use their front flippers to help them walk on land and climb rocks.
