Writing on water

water_printing.jpgResearchers at Akishima Laboratories in Japan have developed a way to spell out words and draw pictures on the surface of a pool by using 50 wave generators.

The generators create “pixels” in the water and combine them to create letters.

In their first attempt, it took 15 minutes using waves to “print” on the surface of a specially-built pool. With their second attempt, scientists were able to cut the processing time down to between 15 and 30 seconds to form characters with straight lines.

Eventually this technology could be combined with music and lighting effects to create multimedia attractions at hotels or theme parks. How cool would that be!
