Jordan Spieth, 23, is one of the best young golfers in the world. He has won nine PGA Tour events, including two major championships. On April 6, he plays for his second victory at the Masters Tournament. BL chatted with Spieth about the tournament, his superstitions and what he keeps in his golf bag.
What makes the Masters such a favorite among fans and players?
J.S.: It’s the tradition. So many golf legends have played the Masters, and some of the game’s most historic moments come from Augusta National Golf Club.
What’s a typical week like leading up to a big tournament like the Masters?
J.S.: Our goal is to peak at the majors, so there’s a lot of extra work that goes into the weeks leading up to the Masters: Studying the course, running through every possible scenario as I play the greens and really making sure I feel comfortable come [the tournament’s start] Thursday morning.
Do you have any superstitions when playing?
J.S.: I wouldn’t say I have any “superstitions” but a habit: I typically play a Titleist No. 4 ball on Thursdays, No. 3 ball on Fridays, No. 2 ball on Saturdays and, of course, the No. 1 ball on Sundays.
Other than golf equipment, what do you carry in your golf bag? Anything unusual?
J.S.: Always a snack, like granola or a protein bar. It can be a grind out there, so I try to keep a snack in my bag and lots of water to stay fueled.
How many hours a week do you practice?
J.S.: It definitely depends on the week, but on a week at home I spend a few hours with my coach, an hour or so doing physical training and a few more hours playing or hitting balls.
How do you keep from getting frustrated when you hit a bad shot?
J.S.: I focus on each shot individually, knowing that if I hit a bad shot then it’s even more important for me to move forward and focus on what I need to do with my next shot.
What are your hobbies when not playing golf?
J.S.: I love watching sports. I also love being out on the water whenever I can for water sports or to fish.
When did you first pick up a golf club?
J.S.: I was about 3 years old and had a toy set. It was nothing serious at that age — just loved swinging.
