With hopes to have every bottle it sells in the U.S. recycled or reused, the Coca-Cola Company plans to help build a $45 million plastics recycling plant in South Carolina.
Coke estimates that only 10 percent of its plastic bottles are currently being recycled. The world’s largest soft drink company does not yet have a target date for when it would reach the 100 percent goal.
In a joint venture with the United Resource Recovery Corporation, the new 30-acre plant would produce about 100 million pounds of food-grade recyclable plastic per year which is equivalent to nearly 2 billion 20-ounce Coca-Cola bottles.
