Forget steel or even carbon fiber. The future of bike construction could be bamboo.
Craig Calfee, one of the country’s best bike builders, has started making bicycles with frames made of bamboo. He’s constructed over 90 so far, and riders say the bamboo bikes cushion road shock better than many other materials.
Calfee’s custom bikes are pretty expensive, but he thinks that modified versions of his bamboo bikes could be used to provide transportation in the Third World.
