By now, we all know Superman’s origin story: He was born on another planet, his parents sent him to Earth just before that planet exploded, he grew up in Kansas with superpowers, and he eventually became the hero we all know and love.

Since we already know that story, the latest Superman movie skips all of that and throws us right into the middle of the action. And mostly, it’s great!

This movie picks up three years after Superman has revealed himself to the world and three minutes after he’s lost a fight for the first time ever. From there, the superhero who’s been called the Big Blue Boy Scout has to figure out what’s gone wrong.

It’s not a spoiler to say that Superman’s archenemy, Lex Luthor, is going to be a problem. Can Superman, with the help of his friends Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, along with a few other superpowered people, defeat the greatest criminal mastermind on the planet?

You can find out when the movie flies into theaters this weekend, but in the meantime, here are five merit badges that would be perfect for the Man of Steel.

Journalism

When he’s not flying around fighting bad guys, Superman works as a journalist named Clark Kent. Clark wears superpowered glasses that keep people from realizing that he’s the same guy who’s been flying around all over the world, beating up evil aliens, evil robots and everything that’s evil in between.

The skills that Scouts learn by earning the Journalism merit badge would come in handy for someone who’s not only a good superhero but also a pretty darn good reporter.

Dog Care

>Yes, Superman has a dog! His name is Krypto, and he’s adorable.

Like many dogs that have a lot of extra energy, Krypto is all over the place. Imagine a dog that gets the zoomies — only the dog can fly! That’s what Krypto is like.

The Dog Care merit badge, which requires Scouts to care for and train a dog, would definitely be useful to Superman.

Citizenship in the World

Early in the movie, Superman flies across the world to stop two countries from going to war. It seemed to him like the right thing to do; however, some people seem to think that it was a mistake to get involved in the first place. This causes a lot of people to turn against Superman.

The Citizenship in the World merit badge teaches Scouts what it means to be a good world citizen.

Family Life

Superman’s parents — both on Krypton and on Earth — have been big parts of every Superman story. This one is no different.

His Kryptonian parents save his life by sending him to Earth before their planet is destroyed. The couple that adopts him when he lands in Kansas teaches Clark right from wrong at a young age, shaping him into the man he eventually becomes.

Scouts who earn the Family Life merit badge will learn why families are important, both to individuals and to society as a whole.

Crime Prevention

Ultimately, Superman is a guy who just tries to do the right thing every day of his life. Most of the time, that involves stopping bad guys when they try to steal money and destroy the world.

At one point during the movie, Lex Luthor has the world fooled into thinking that he is the good guy and Superman is the bad guy. But anyone who has earned the Crime Prevention merit badge knows that there are laws designed to protect people in their community and around the world.

Is Superman a good movie?

Yes!

Superman is jam-packed with tons of action, jokes and heart. If you like fight scenes, it’s got plenty of those. If you like funny scenes with a rambunctious dog, it’s got that. And it’s got a little bit of romance as well, if that’s your thing.

Superman is rated PG-13 for violence, action and language. It hits theaters this weekend.
