Summer Solstice

The Northern Hemisphere tilts as close to the sun as it will all year this evening at 7:59 p.m. Eastern. The arrival of the solstice marks the official beginning of summer.

That means the United States will enjoy its longest days of the year this weekend. The sun will rise at 5:15 a.m. in Angle Inlet, Minn., the northernmost city in the continental United States. It won’t set in Angle Inlet until 9:30 p.m.

At Key West, Fla., the southernmost city in the continental United States, the sun rises at 6:39 a.m. and sets at 8:19 p.m.

The sun won’t set at all in Barrow, Alaska.
