Say Hello To America’s New National Mammal: The Bison

The bald eagle, our national bird, will soon be making room for a furry friend. The U.S. Congress recently passed the National Bison Legacy Act, making the massive animal the first national mammal of the U.S.

Why? In many ways, the North American bison is already a longstanding historical symbol of the U.S. It’s the country’s largest native land animal, it has deep roots in Native American communities and played a vital role in the westward expansion of the country.
