March marks the start of bug season, also called swarm season! Here are some tips and tricks to stay safe around bugs like bees, wasps and mosquitoes.

1. Bugs love bright white and blue lights, so try using yellow “bug lights” to keep them away.
2. Campfire smoke helps keep pesky bugs away while you enjoy the fire.
3. Plant citrus, lavender, peppermint or lemongrass, or use the oils of those plants as a spray — bugs don’t like those smells!
4. Protect your pets with flea and tick medicine to help keep everyone safe.
5. Food is an invitation for bugs, so clean up after eating.
6. Wear long-sleeve shirts and pants to make it harder for bugs to get to your skin. Another hack: Don light-colored clothes since some insects, like mosquitoes, are more attracted to dark-colored ones.
7. Stick cloves into lemon halves for a natural, nice-smelling bug shield.
8. And, of course, be sure to wear bug spray. It should contain DEET (20%-30% concentration) or picaridin (20% concentration).
