Buying cool new gear can be great, but actually making something with your hands can be incredibly rewarding, too. Just ask Tyler Leonard, an 11-year-old outdoors enthusiast who started his own business using his Victorinox Swiss Army Knife and some great business sense.

Tyler’s company is called Bridle Path Walking Sticks, and he creates one-of-a-kind walking sticks for hikers and backpackers. Earlier this week, Boys’ Life got the chance to chat with Tyler about walking sticks, business advice and his trusty Victorinox Swiss Army Knife.

How did you come up with the idea for Bridle Path Walking Sticks?

I was doing some work for a family friend, and instead of paying me in cash, he paid me with a Swiss Army Knife. One day, when I was bored, I started trying out all the new tools on the Swiss Army Knife. I decided to try carving a walking stick. And thanks to my Swiss Army Knife, it turned into a business.

What makes your Victorinox Swiss Army Knife such a great tool?

It makes carving easy. Plus, it has all the tools that I need to make the walking sticks. I use the Huntsman model, and it’s a very dependable and reliable tool. It has everything you could possibly need in one compact tool that fits right in your pocket. I’ve been using the same knife for a year, and it’s still in great condition.

Using a knife is a big responsibility. How do you make sure you’re being safe when using your Swiss Army Knife?

It takes lots of practice, and you have to be careful where and how you use your hands. It helps having a long, sharp blade, like the one on my Swiss Army Knife.

What advice would you give to readers who might be interested in starting their own business?

It’s a lot of fun, but you have to remember: No matter how many times you mess something up, you have to keep trying. With that attitude, eventually you’re going to succeed.
