On May 14, 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out from Missouri on an expedition to explore the territory recently acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. After trekking over the Rocky Mountains, to the Pacific Ocean and then back again, the expedition finally returned to St. Louis on Sept. 23, 1806.
