Alan Shepard became the first American in space on May 5, 1961. Today marks the 50th anniversary of his historic flight aboard Freedom 7. Shepard traveled 116 miles above earth’s surface and spent a total of 15 minutes in outer space.

An estimated 45 million Americans watched Shepard’s flight on television. Click the video player below to see the launch.
