On April 27, 1947, every major league ballpark in the country celebrated Babe Ruth Day. The Great Bambino, sick with throat cancer, appeared at Yankee Stadium that day and spoke to the crowd. He passed away only 16 months later. At the time, he held baseball’s career home run record with 714.
