A devastating earthquake struck San Francisco on April 18, 1906. The powerful quake was felt from Oregon to Southern California. No measuring tools existed at that time, but experts say the quake most likely would have registered 7.8 to 8.3 on the Richter scale.

The quake shook San Francisco for a full minute, leaving many of the city’s buildings in ruin. An estimated 3,000 to 5,000 people died.

  1. I have liked history of great natural disasters(e.x. chicogo fire) for a while and I love learning about the 1906 earthquake and watching this footage makes me sad.
