On Aug. 12, 1880, one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history was born. Christy Mathewson played 17 seasons beginning in 1900 and ending in 1916. All but one of his games came as a member of the New York Giants. Four times he won more than 30 games in a season, and he led the National League in ERA five times. He finished his career with 373 wins and became a charter member of MLB’s Hall of Fame in 1936.
