First in Space

On this date 49 years ago, astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space. At 9:34 a.m. on May 5, 1961, a Mercury spacecraft rocketed Shepard out of our atmosphere with 75,000 pounds of thrust. He spent 5 weightless minutes in space before reentering Earth’s atmosphere and parachuting safely into the Atlantic Ocean.
