Don’t Pet Moose!

You may have noticed the first tip in March’s 100th anniversary issue of Boys’ Life: Never feed a bear. Here’s another piece of advice: Don’t try to pet a moose.

A wild moose kicked an Alaska woman this week after she tried to pet the animal in a city park. She was checked by medics, and did not have to go to a hospital.

The moose had been in the park most of the day feeding on trees. The woman, in her 20s, was kicked in the chest and shoulder after approaching the moose. Moose do not feel threatened unless provoked. So, make sure to give these animals plenty of space.

“Moose” made for a great nickname in our February 1953 issue. Click here to read “Clown in the Key Slot,” Boys’ Life fiction about Moose Conklin and the Valley High basketball team.
