Close Encounter

An asteroid measuring 16- to 33-feet wide passed between the moon and Earth around 6:50 Eastern this morning. This asteroid, named 2010 TD54, was discovered Saturday during routine scans by a telescope in Arizona. At its closest, the asteroid was within about 28,000 miles of Earth’s surface.

Experts consider this asteroid “small.” It had no chance of impacting Earth. Even if it had it most likely would have burned up in the atmosphere. An asteroid this size impacts Earth about once every two years.
