Each year, after an extensive nationwide search, three American citizens are chosen to receive Citizen Service Before Self Honors. To be considered for this rare honor, nominees must have made a difference in the lives of others through an act of extraordinary heroism, or through their continued commitment to putting others first.
Nominations are submitted by citizens from across the country, and the three finalists are chosen by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. The three honorees will receive the award from recipients of the Medal of Honor at a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
The 2013 ceremony will be especially significant, marking the 150th anniversary of first Medals of Honor. The medals were first presented on March 25, 1863 to a group of six men for valiant acts performed during the Civil War.
So far, more than 70 nominations have been entered, but there is still plenty of time to nominate a hero by Dec. 28.
