See China’s Straddling Bus In Action

A Chinese company has designed a “straddling bus” that will carry citizens of Beijing in futuristic fashion. Each bus, about two street lanes wide and 18-feet tall, will help ease traffic on China’s congested — and polluted — highways.

How? These elevated, U-shaped people movers will carry hundreds of people at a time at speeds of roughly 30 miles per hour. Stilt-like wheels hold the passenger compartment above the street, allowing cars to pas underneath. It’s estimated that each straddling bus will replace about 40 traditional buses. Powered by roof-mounted solar panels and electricity, the straddling bus will also be easy on the environment.
