Blackbeard’s Anchor

Archaeologists lifted out of the Atlantic Ocean an anchor belonging to the dreaded pirate Blackbeard last week. This 11-foot-tall, 7.5-foot-wide anchor was the third largest on Blackbeard’s ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge.

The ship sunk in 1718 near the coast of modern-day North Carolina. Archaeologists hope to have recovered the entire ship by 2013.

We featured Blackbeard and his famed treasure in our November 1993 issue. Click here to check it out.
