5 Reasons Space Camp Is Out-Of-This-World

From the Apollo 11 lunar landing to Curiosity’s thrilling landing on Mars, you’ve probably read all about our country’s incredible missions to space. But actually training like an astronaut and learning what it takes to live and work in space, that’s what Space Camp is all about. Here are five reasons Space Camp is out-of-this-world.

What Is Space Camp?

Located in Huntsville, Alabama, at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center — the Official Visitor Center for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center — Space Camp is a one-of-a-kind interactive, STEM-based space experience. Each year trainees of all ages travel from across the United States and more than 70 countries to participate in its programs.

At Space Camp, you don’t just read and study — you experience those missions yourself, seeing the actual rockets towering above you and meeting people passionate about space exploration. That’s a giant leap toward inspiring you for life.

You will learn space and flight history, work together as teams, experience astronaut training simulators, complete simulated space missions and learn what it really means to be an astronaut.

All About STEM

STEM has become such a buzzword that you probably already know what it stands for: science, technology, engineering and math.

Space Camp programs provide an exciting, immersive experience amidst a backdrop of mankind’s greatest technological achievements in space. But STEM takes on a whole new meaning at Space Camp, preparing young people for a future in STEM-related fields in unique and exciting ways.

Also cool: astronaut speakers visit Space Camp every week in the summer.

Scouting and Space Camp: A Perfect Match

The link between Scouting and the space program has been well documented. Less known but equally powerful is the long-standing relationship between Scouting and Space Camp.

Scouting has always sought to develop the best possible Scout. At Space Camp, the same factors apply, engaging Scouts with an experience that is as authentically and rigorously embedded in something grand.

Like Scouting, the program puts young people in an environment where all five senses are engaged and learning comes naturally. And at Space Camp, Scouts can also earn or work toward the Space Exploration, Aviation or Robotics merit badges.

Hands-on Experiences

Learning with all five senses means more than simply studying at a desk.

At Space Camp, you’ll explore the amazing artifacts housed at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Experience firsthand the National Historic Landmark Saturn V rocket, the Smithsonian Institution’s largest artifact; an Apollo 12 moon rock; mobile quarantine facility and Pathfinder Space Shuttle.

At Space Camp, you’ll have an unparalleled environment to spur imagination while being surrounded by space, aviation and defense artifacts. And you’ll truly go from “What if?” to “Can do!”
