Roll out of bed. Put on sneakers. Run 26.2 miles. That’s been the life of Belgian Stefaan Engels for more than a year now. The 49-year-old completed 401 marathons in 401 days, which set a world record.
Engels began his daily marathon routine Jan. 1, 2010. An injury forced him to use a hand bike for a short time. After his injury healed, he ran 365 consecutive marathons on foot, thoroughly abusing 25 pairs of running shoes. He finished his last 26.2 miles Feb. 5, 2011.
We looked at the art of running the mile — and some of the greats who did it best — in our April 1986 issue. Click here to read every word.
